Telluride Acoustic Blues Competition Gives Aspiring Artists a Shot on the Main Stage
On Saturday, Sept. 15, the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival presents the 12th Annual Telluride Acoustic Blues Competition. The always-popular event takes place from 9 a.m. to noon during the Festival's Blues for Breakfast concert held at Telluride Elks Lodge, 472 W. Pacific Ave. For a nominal fee, take in solo performances by Acoustic Blues Competition finalists while enjoying breakfast, bloody marys, mimosas, and a full cash bar. Sunday's Blues for Breakfast also features Big Jim Adam & John Stilwagen.
The Telluride Acoustic Blues Competition seeks talented, aspiring musicians who excel in the blues music genre to participate in the event. The contest is open to any solo acoustic performer who is not currently signed to a record label or publishing deal. The competition invites six finalists to perform two songs (original or blues standard) at the breakfast. The musicians will be judged on presentation, use of instruments, vocals, and overall live performance. In addition, each competitor is asked to perform a third blues standard song selected by the judges. But don't worry competitors, each selected candidate will be notified of which song they are to play, so there will be plenty of time to practice!
The winner of the 2012 competition receives a $300 dollar cash prize, and a custom acoustic "Dobrato" resophonic guitar valued at $1,200, courtesy of Castle Creek Guitars in Gunnison, Colorado. And, more importantly, the winner will also be given the opportunity to perform a musical set on the Festival's Main Stage on Saturday evening after the Grand Tasting. The runner-up receives a cash prize and a Godin Guitar provided by Telluride Music. All finalists receive a commemorative tee shirt, a Three-Day Festival pass, and a $25 gift certificate provided by sponsor Telluride Music Company, located at 201 East Colorado Ave.

Telluride Blues & Brews Kicks off the Weekend with Little Hurricane for the Bal de Maison
The 19th Annual Telluride Blues & Brews Festival is proud to announce San Diego Blues/Rock duo Little Hurricane for the Bal de Maison, a special weekend opening performance at the Historic Sheridan Opera House on Thursday, September 13th at 9:00pm. Limited tickets for the Bal de Maison are $20.00 and are currently onsale now at tellurideblues.com or by phone at (866) 515-6166.
Little Hurricane is currently touring the country in support of their debut album, Homewrecker, a hard-hitting sounding album that spins their timeworn dirty blues with a formula of comforting familiarity with originality. That is the one musical accolade that sticks out about this album, their originality and consistency throughout the album. Each album track blends their unique sound with the next and leaves you wanting more! The album is packed with raw, dirty blues spun with indie rock influences, great lyrics and a sound that will be unforgotten.
Little Hurricane embeds soulful verses and harmonized vocals, blending a synergic approach to finding the thread between the electric soul of Chicago blues and the raw grit of West Coast indie rock. Fronted by Anthony “Tone” Catalano on guitar, and backed by Celeste “CC” Spina on drums, the two young multi-instrumentalists have been making waves with their tension-building song structures embedded in six string distortion, heavy percussion, and tragically honest lyrical content.
As I Live Music blogger, Adam E. Smith put it, “this dynamic chemistry has afforded them the chance to take their deep blues tales to the frontlines of festivals with spots at Lollapalooza, South By Southwest, and Austin City Limits.” Making it a habit to stun audiences around the country, the buzzing live performance whirlwind is nothing short of impressive for a Southern California band that met via Craigslist and released their debut album Homewrecker in April of last year.
All festival passes are currently onsale now. Saturday and Sunday passes are $65 with Friday passes fetching just $55. Three-Day passes run $170, Juke Joint passes are $25 per night, and feature late night jams at various intimate venues. Festival 4-day camping passes are $40 per person, with camping located adjacent to the Festival grounds starting Thursday, September 13.
For festival information or to purchase tickets visit us online at tellurideblues.com. To purchase tickets by phone call toll-free at (866) 515-6166. Tickets available locally at both Telluride Music, located at 123 E. Colorado Ave and Wizard Entertainment, located at 126 East Colorado Avenue.
