September 12, 2011 (Telluride, CO) – Just another reason to attend the 18th Annual Telluride Blues & Brews Festival!The Telluride Blues & Brews festival is delighted to announce a free concert to kick-off the weekend's festivities, the Sunset Blues Concert, which will be held on Thursday, September 15, 2011, featuring Arizona’s voted Best Blues Band, The Sugar Thieves.

There is no better way to launch the Telluride Blues & Brews Festival than with Sugar Thieves guitarist Mikel Lander and singer Meridith Moore. They have proven that hard work, massive talent and big dreams can get you where you want to go. The band’s dedicated intent and serious chops has brought them to this lofty achievement playing the festival main stage and the Sunset Blues Concert. Instantly embraced here in Telluride, the band is wildly popular in Arizona where they’ve been voted Best Blues Band in Arizona, among other accolades. And at the International Blues Challenge of 2009-10, they were named as one of the Top 10 unsigned bands. The Sugar Thieves’ mission is to re-introduce the blues to the next generation. Along with soulful originals, the Thieves feature classic blues songs from the 1920s-40s and serve it all up sultry and warm.

The 18th Annual Telluride Blues & Brews Festival will also feature featuring headliners Willie Nelson, The Flaming Lips, and Big Head Todd and the Monsters. The 2011 Festival promises a magical three-day celebration of live blues, rock, funk, gospel, jam band, aspiring new talent, and some of the biggest stars on the Festival circuit today! With over 20 nationally touring acts on the main stage, blues with breakfast, and late-night jams in five Juke Joint venues; musical entertainment abounds in Telluride at the 18th Annual Telluride Blues & Brews Festival.

In addition to a fun-filled weekend with great music, delicious beer, breathtaking scenery, an action packed kid-zone, and intimate late night Juke Joint shows, we are proud to announce an additional fun activity for all festival campers to enjoy. The Telluride Blues & Brews Festival is proud to announce the Coolest Campsite Challenge.

Back for its fourth year, the Coolest Campsite Challenge is great way for you to participate in making the festival campground extra festive, while having the opportunity to win some sweet Blues & Brews Festival prizes.

How it works!

Every festival camper can participate and there is no registration required! Come to the festival, find your campsite and turn it into a unique, fun, colorful and themed paradise. During the festival, the Blues & Brews staff will send around seasoned campsite judges to look for the coolest campsite. Judges will be looking for campsites that have a defined theme that are creative and original. Judges will also be looking for sustainable and community oriented sites. Above all, judges will be looking for the coolest camp site in town park!

Get creative, go all out, and make a campsite that is cooler than all others. Just remember to keep it PG, as families do occupy the campground. Also, make sure to label your campsite so we know who we are judging.

What’s in it for you?

If your campsite is creative, original, and picked as the coolest camp site you will receive two 3-Day Passes to the 19^th Annual Telluride Blues & Brews Festival to be held September 14-16, 2012, along with all bragging rights that comes with having the coolest campsite in Telluride.

Second coolest campsite will receive two camping passes to the 19^th Annual Telluride Blues & Brews Festival.

The third coolest campsite will receive two Blues & Brews souvenir t-shits.

Winners will be announced Sunday morning on the festival main stage.

The Telluride Blues and Brews Festival presents the 11^th annual Telluride Acoustic Blues Competition to take place Saturday morning at the 18^th annual Telluride Blues and Brews Festival. We are calling unsigned talented blues artists to come play raw, solo, and acoustic in beautiful Telluride, Colorado. Top six artists will be invited play at the Blues Breakfast at the Elks Lodge in downtown Telluride front of blues fans and judges looking for the most outstanding blues performance. Competitors will be judged on overall live performance, presentation, and use of instruments, vocals.

Brewery Profile: Home of the Brave Beverage Company

Home of the Brave is not your typical microbrewery. Located thousands of miles away from Telluride in the beautiful city of Honolulu, Hawaii and a mission to serve men and women in the United States Military, this new venture is as unique as the beer they brew. Recently a member of the Blues and Brews staff got to talk with Home of the Brave president and founder Glen Tomlinson about the Home of the Brave Beverage Company and their beer. This is what he found out.

In 1991 Glen Tomlinson started Home of Brave Company in conjunction with the 50 year anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. The company was started to educate the military, island visitors, schools, and veterans by conducting tours and historical educational programs in Honolulu, Hawaii. Tomlinson’s family owns the Home of the Brave historical WWII museum that features one of the largest and most unique collections of WWII memorabilia in the pacific. After 20 years of working with the United States Military, Tomlinson decided to start a beer company.

Tomlinson explains “My two sons moved from the islands to Colorado to go to college. Duke went to school in Ft. Collins and Baron went to Ft. Lewis in Durango, CO. Both boys fell in love with craft beer and started home brewing with their friends. Prior to graduation, they were determined to get into the craft beer business and proposed that we create quality beverages for the U.S. Military.”

As the Home of the Brave Beverage Company was born, so was their first beer Pilot Pale Ale. Pilot Pale ale was created by O’Dell brewer Jeff Doyle and brewed in collaboration with Maui Brewing Company. Tomlinson says “We couldn’t have done it without the help of Garrett Marerro, president of Maui Brewing Co. who took us under his wing and in the true spirit of craft brewing, helped us get started”. Garrett continues to support Home of the Brave Beverage Company, brewing their draft beer at the award winning Maui Brewing Co.

Tomlinson describes Pilot Pale ale as “craft-brewed with bread like malt character so as to avoid sweetness, while still maintaining just enough body to balance out a delicate dry bitterness, fermented with an American ale yeast strain. You can taste the natural fruity esters from fermentation that harmonize with a generous aroma hop addition of spicy citrus floral American hops. It has a light crisp dry finish that leaves just a breath of bitter bouquet.”

In addition to Pilot Pale Ale, Home of the Brave, also brews Landing Zone Lager and is working on a dark lager scheduled to release in December, to commemorate the 70^th year anniversary of the attack on Pearl Harbor. Home of the Brave brews are currently being served at military bases to support the troops and restaurants on the island of Oahu, Hawaii. Keep an eye out for Home of the Brave brews as Sprecher’s Brewing in Wisconsin is now producing Home of the Brave bottled beer and sodas for continental US distribution. Artist Profile-Artist Profile Fitz and the Tantrums

Dapper suits, vintage organs and a fresh, modern view on soul music. Have you heard Fitz and the Tantrums yet? If you haven’t joined the crowd, you will soon. In the past few months Fitz and the Tantrums have gone from a relatively unknown LA band, to a band in the global spot light with their debut album Pickin Up the Pieces . A few weeks ago Pickin' Up the Pieces exploded to number one on the new artist album charts, and 18^th on the Indy charts. This week Pickin’ Up the Pieces is ranked 41^st on the Indy charts, and 7^th on the new artists charts. Pickin' Up the Pieces also received a rave review of three and half out of four stars by Rolling Stone Magazine.

So what is all the hype about? Fitz and the Tantrums are making a unique sound that is bringing soul back into new music. Instead of using a guitar as the center piece of their music, they use saxophone and an organ. Their music can be described as a soulful, hand clapping, foot stomping, energetic explosion. When listening to songs like “MoneyGrabber” and “Breakin the Chains of Love” you can’t help, but want to dance. Add soul tingling live shows it is no surprise this band is picking up new fans every day.

The birth of this soulful explosion happened when band member Fitz got an organ. Only seven hours after receiving this organ Fitz wrote a soul anthem “Braking the Chains of love.” The lead singer Fitz explains “I’ve always been a singer,” but with so much music, I felt that I was trying to push a square peg through a round hole. I was being not true to myself, and it never felt right until I wrote that song, and I sang like that. I thought, this feels so real, so natural.”

After that, Fitz and the Tantrums recorded a full album in Fitz’s living room, was personally invited to tour with pop-artists Maroon 5, open for Flogging Molly, played in front of thousands at Red Rocks Amphitheater in Colorado, and is now selling out stops all over the country.

Alberta Cross are a New York-based band, formed by Petter Ericson Stakee (vocals, guitar) & Terry Wolfers (bass). Despite their different upbringings - Petter travelled from an early age between Sweden and England with his singer-songwriter father whilst Terry was brought up in London's East End - they formed what would later become Alberta Cross. After relocating to Brooklyn, New York, Petter and Terry solidified the line-up with the addition of Austin Beede, Alec Higgins and Sam Kearney.

The band's sound has been compared to Kings of Leon, The Band, Neil Young, The Raconteurs and other blues-influenced rock bands.

Back by popular demand, we are going to hold the 3rd Annual Telluride Blues & Brews Coolest Campsite Challenge! Anyone that is camping at the festival this year has the opportunity to win some amazing prizes just by having creative campsites. NO REGISTRATION REQUIRED!!! The campsites will be judged, as were last year, on their creativity, originality, and quality. In addition, this year we would like to see sustainability and community considered in the sites. 3 judges will roam the campgrounds in search of the coolest campsite throughout the festival and the winners will be announced Sunday after the Gospel hour. The New Orleans-based jazz-funk ensemble Galactic formed in 1994; originally an eight-piece, the group soon pared down to an instrumental sextet comprised of guitarist Jeff Raines, organist Rich Vogel, bassist Robert Mercurio, saxophonists Ben Ellman and Jason Mingledorff, and drummer Stanton Moore. Later adding Crescent City music scene vet Theryl deClouet on vocals, Galactic built a fervent local following on the strength of a relentless live schedule that included opening slots for group heroes including the Meters, Maceo Parker, and Medeski, Martin & Wood. In 1996 Galactic issued their debut LP, Coolin' Off; upon signing to major label Capricorn, they re-released the album two years later, soon followed by the all-new Crazyhorse Mongoose. Since that time, they have released a handful of albums including Late for the Future in 2000, Ruckus in 2003, and From the Corner to the Block in 2007. The band itself released a pair of live albums of its sets at Jazz Fest in 2008 and 2009. In 2010 they issued their most ambitious project to date with Ya-Ka-May, a wholesale New Orleans recording featuring guest appearances by everyone from Irma Thomas and Big Chief Bo Dollis to the Rebirth Brass Band and Walter "Wolfman" Washington. Allen Toussaint (born January 14, 1938) is an American musician, songwriter and record producer and one of the most influential figures in New Orleans R&B.

Allen Toussaint has crossed many paths in his illustrious 40 years plus career in music. He has produced, written for, arranged, had his songs covered by, and performed with music giants The Judds, Paul McCartney, Paul Simon, Elvis Costello, Patti LaBelle, Mac "Dr. John" Rebannac, Aaron and Art Neville, Joe Cocker, The (original) Meters, Glen Campbell, The Band, Little Feat, The Rolling Stones, Devo, Ernie K-Doe, Lee Dorsey, Irma Thomas, Etta James, Ramsey Lewis, Eric Gale and the countless others.

His songs/productions have been featured in numerous films, including but not limited to, Casino, Moulin Rouge, and Maid in Manhattan. He served as musical director for the off Broadway play, Staggerlee, which won the prestigious Outer Circle Critics Award.

Toussaint career began in his early twenties when hired by the local Minit Records to supervise its recording activities, awaiting their arrival of Harold Batiste. Toussaint quickly accumulated an amazing string of hits for the label, producing, writing, arranging and often performing on tracks by Ernie K-Doe, Irma Thomas, Art and Aaron Neville, Chris Kenner, and Benny Spellman, putting his signature New Orleans sound on the map, an obvious continuation of the Domino/Bartholomew era.

With the help of Sierra Nevada Brewery, we will be developing our own recipe exclusively for the 17^th annual Telluride Blues & Brews Festival. Sierra Nevada will then brew 70 kegs to be sold at the festival – wow, we hope you like what we come up with! Thanks Sierra Nevada!

Blues singer and guitarist T-Model Ford was born as James Lewis Carter Ford in 1924 in the small rural town of Forest, Mississippi. By age eleven T-Model was plowing a field behind a mule on his family's farm. Ford got a job at a local saw mill in his early teens. T-Model eventually secured an even better job as a truck driver for a bigger lumber company. Moreover, Ford was sentenced to a chain gang for ten years for murder. Luckily, he was released after serving only two years of his sentence. In addition, T-Model also worked at a logging camp. He has recorded four fabulously lowdown rough and dirty albums for Fat Possum Records: "Pee-Wee Get My Gun," "You Better Keep Still," "She Ain't None of Your'n," and "Bad Man." With his savage moan of a ragged voice and gritty guitar playing style, Ford brings a gloriously raw and blunt ferocity to Mississippi Delta blues music that's both passionate and powerful in equal measure. T-Model appears as himself in the charming comedy short feature "Lohues Gets the Blues" and the excellent documentary "You See Me Laughin'." T-Model Ford lives in Greenville, Mississippi with his girlfriend Stella.

George Thorogood & the Destroyers Added to the 2010 Festival Line-Up!

George is proud to have a stellar line-up join him on the road, including original Destroyer drummer Jeff Simon, who has been in the band since 1973. Also sharing the stage, longtime Destroyer bassist Bill Blough, lead guitarist Jim Suhler and sax player Buddy Leach. "I do the tour for all my fans," Thorogood says, "so we will be doing both the fan favorites and ‘George’s favorites’ -- and we will all have a great time."
Formed in Delaware in the early 1970s, George Thorogood & The Destroyers slew audiences across the country with their raucous take on classic urban rock and blues. The band broke big with the immortal rocker "Bad to the Bone," the title track from their gold-certified 1982 album. That song has been a perennial favorite, featured in everything from James Camreon’s "The Terminator" to the recent Wrangler’s commercial starring Bret Favre.
The wind has been at Thorogood’s back ever since. The Destroyers were the first, and perhaps the only, band to perform in 50 states in 50 days (accomplished in the early 1980s), and gained wide exposure in those early glory days of MTV.
The 2004 gold-certified compilation, "Greatest Hits: 30 Years of Rock," went gold and was Billboard’s Blues Album of the Year two years running. Just last year, the band released "The Dirty Dozen," which paired six new studio recordings with six classic fan favorites, including three popular tracks that had been out-of-print in the U.S.
Even with all his success, Thorogood is nothing if not thoroughly modest. Says the legendary rocker, "I’m just trying to hold my gig. I just want to make sure that at the end of the night the promoter comes up and says, ‘I want to book you again.’"

Black Joe Lewis & the Honeybears have soul! We are so excited to have on the Main Stage on Sunday, September 19 & at the Sheridan Opera House on Saturday, September 18. They are a festival "must see"!

Anatomy texts might not show it, but the greatest soul and blues music leaves no doubt that the hip bone is directly connected to the heart -- a fact that’s driven home in every note laid down by Black Joe Lewis and the Honeybears. As they prove on their Lost Highway debut, Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is, the Austin-based combo has the kind of gritty attitude and deliciously greasy groove-consciousness that’d pass muster in the toughest juke joint.

To paraphrase Ike and Tina Turner, Tell ‘Em What Your Name Is gives Lewis the chance to play nice and easy as well as nice and rough. He and his band mates take the latter route more often -- as on the fiery, brass-laced opener “Gunpowder” and the unabashedly horn dog anthem “Big Booty Woman.” But there’s far more than one trick up their collective sleeve, as borne out by the dark New Orleans march “Master Sold My Baby.” That from-the-gut stream-of-consciousness permeates the disc, with Lewis wailing wildly -- in a voice that’s one part Joe Tex, one part Tyrone Davis -- through sweat-soaked offerings like the gut bucket “I’m Broke” and “Please, Part Two” as his band mates turn up the heat, taking a low simmer to a full boil with turn-on-a-dime precision.

We are so excited to have JJ Grey & Mofro back in the line-up this year. With a new album (Georgia Warhorse) out August 24, you don't want to miss thsese guys on the Main Stage Saturday, September 18 or thier Juke Joint performance at the Telluride Conference Center.

Like Florida’s state flower, the orange blossom, musician JJ Grey’s songs are fascinating, beautiful, and complex. Both are products of the same ground: the rich, fertile and ancient soil of the Sunshine State. Born and raised just outside of Jacksonville, Florida, Grey comes from a long tradition of Southern musical storytellers and, like the best of the great Southern writers; he fills his songs with details that are at once vivid and personal, political and universal. His multi-textured music overflows with dynamic rhythms and thought-provoking lyrics. From raw funk to deep soul, blues and rock, JJ and his band Mofro deliver devastating live and recorded performances.

JJ Grey’s songs blend front porch realism with the best musical and literary traditions of the South. Whether it is a narrative passed down to him from his grandmother or the tribulations of a childhood friend, Grey’s ear for detail rings through in true storytelling fashion. His voice delivers with an unflinching strength that makes the personal universal and paints a vivid portrait of an exact time or place. Like his songs, Grey’s rich, soulful vocals are forceful and commanding, seemingly wise and experienced beyond his years.

Artist Diane Millsap is passionate about New Orleans. She loves its architecture, its people, and most of all, its music. Her frequent painting trips to New Orleans have brought her a great appreciation for the city’s soulful blues and jazz musicians. She finds their music to be a constant source of inspiration.

Her popular New Orleans prints are sold in such retail stores as Bed, Bath, & Beyond and widely distributed by on-line merchants Art.com and All Posters.com.

Her vibrant, distinctive paintings of New Orleans have been chosen by many corporations and civic organizations as marketing images, and her paintings hang in many private and corporate collections across the United States and abroad.
